India to Canada time difference at a glance

India is 9 hours 30 minutes ahead of Toronto when Toronto is on daylight time and 10 hours 30 minutes ahead of it when Toronto is on standard time. India uses one time zone, IST (UTC+5:30), all year.

CityDaylight time gapStandard time gap
Toronto9 hours 30 minutes10 hours 30 minutes
Vancouver12 hours 30 minutes (no clock change)
Calgary11 hours 30 minutes (no clock change)
Halifax8 hours 30 minutes9 hours 30 minutes

Ontario, Quebec and Atlantic Canada, including Toronto and Halifax, still move their clocks forward on the second Sunday in March and back on the first Sunday in November. Under current rules, the next change back is on 1 November 2026 and the next change forward is on 14 March 2027. In 2026, British Columbia (Vancouver) and Alberta (Calgary) stopped changing their clocks and now stay on the same time all year, as most of Saskatchewan already did. So the gap with Vancouver is always 12 hours 30 minutes and the gap with Calgary is always 11 hours 30 minutes. India does not change its clock either. Rules can change, so check the current rule for your province.

Best time to call Canada from India

Canada has a large Indian community, and many students and workers stay in touch with family at home. The time gap is big, between 8.5 and 12.5 hours, so it helps to plan calls instead of guessing. The east coast (Toronto, Halifax) is easiest. Vancouver has the smallest overlap.

These windows give both sides a normal daytime or evening hour, between 8 AM and about 9:30 PM. They are for a regular weekday.

  • Toronto: Start the call between 7 PM and 9 PM India time (8:30 AM to 10:30 AM in Toronto) in January; start the call between 6 PM and 9 PM India time (8:30 AM to 11:30 AM in Toronto) in July.
  • Vancouver: Start the call between 8 AM and 9 AM India time (7:30 PM to 8:30 PM in Vancouver) in January.
  • Calgary: Start the call between 8 PM and 9 PM India time (8:30 AM to 9:30 AM in Calgary) in January.
  • Halifax: Start the call between 6 PM and 9 PM India time (8:30 AM to 11:30 AM in Halifax) in January; start the call between 5 PM and 9 PM India time (8:30 AM to 12:30 PM in Halifax) in July.

For Toronto, an Indian evening call works well because it is morning in Canada. For Vancouver, the overlap is very small, so one fixed weekly slot is usually easier than calling when you feel like it. If the person in Canada is free only in the evening, call early in the morning in India instead.

Common mistakes with the India to Canada time difference

  • Treating Canada as one time zone. Canada has six time zones. This tool covers Toronto (Eastern), Calgary (Mountain), Vancouver (Pacific) and Halifax (Atlantic).
  • Using one number all year. The gap with Toronto is 9 hours 30 minutes in summer and 10 hours 30 minutes in winter.
  • Forgetting the date change. India is ahead, so late evening in India is still the same day in Canada, but after midnight in India it is still the previous day there.
